Site Electrical Wiring Guidelines
WARNING: DC-powered J4350 and J6350 Services Routers are intended for
installation
only in a restricted access location.
When plan ning the electrica l w iring at your site, con sider the factors
discussed in t
he following sections.
Signaling Limitations
Improperly installed wires can emit radio interference. In addition, the potential
for d amag e fr
om li ghtning strikes increases if wires exceed recommended
distances, or if wires p ass be tween buildin gs. Th e electromagne tic pu lse (EMP)
caused by lightning can damage unshielded conductors and destroy electronic
devices. If y
our s ite has previously experienced such problems, you might want
to consu lt experts in e lectrical surge suppression and shielding.
Radio Frequ
ency Interference
You can redu
ce or eliminate the emission of radio frequency interference (RFI) from
your site wiring by using twisted -p air cable with a good distrib ution of grounding
conductors. If you must exceed the recommended distances, use a high-quality
twisted-pa
ir cable with one ground conductor for each data signal when applicable.
Electromagnetic Compatibility
If your site is susceptible to problems with electromagnetic co m patibility
(EMC), par
ticularly from lightning or radio transmitters, you might want to
seek expert advice. Strong so urces of electromagnetic interference (EMI) can
destroy the signal drivers and receivers in the router and conduct power
surges ove
r the lines i nto t he equipment, resulting in a n electrical hazard.
It is parti cularly important to provide a properly grounded and shielded
environment and to use ele ctrica l surge-suppression devices.
CAUTION: To comply with intrabuilding lightning/surge requirements, intrabuilding
wiringmustbeshielded,andtheshieldforthewiringmustbegroundedatboth
ends.
